Speakers
Julie Laub
Julie Laub is an advanced chemistry teacher at Davis High School and an adjunct professor at Weber State University. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Utah and a Master of Arts in Teaching Science from Western Governors University. Beyond her achievements in education, Julie earned her Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma and is a published author, founder of Lean Think, and workshop facilitator. She is deeply passionate about supporting fellow educators in achieving a healthy work-life balance and guiding students toward their highest levels of success.
In her upcoming presentation, "Lean Think: Revolutionizing Education by Doing Less," Julie will explore how applying Lean principles—commonly used in business and manufacturing—can empower educators to refocus on what truly matters in the classroom. She will discuss how Lean Think isn't about adding another program or checklist, but is a mindset that helps teachers identify waste, simplify processes, and gain more time and energy for impactful teaching. Join her to discover how small, intentional changes can make a big difference in transforming both classroom dynamics and personal balance.

Kara Toone
Kara Toone is a dedicated professional with the Davis Education Foundation, the nonprofit fundraising arm of the Davis School District. She oversees grant writing, student fundraising, employee giving campaigns, and contributes to research, data analysis, and policy development. Passionate about supporting students in need, Kara focuses on the Foundation's initiative to establish Teen Centers—resource hubs in high schools that provide homeless students with essential services like showers, laundry facilities, academic support, and guidance toward graduation and post-secondary success.
Breaking the Cycle of HomelessnessIn her upcoming presentation, Kara will address the growing concern of homelessness in Utah and nationwide, highlighting the alarming increase in family homelessness reported by the Utah Office of Homeless Services in January 2024. She will explore how homelessness affects students—leading to higher absenteeism, food insecurity, suicidal thoughts, poor academic performance, and significantly lower graduation rates. Emphasizing that youth without a high school diploma are at a 346% higher risk of experiencing homelessness in young adulthood, she will discuss how education can be a "silver bullet" to prevent homelessness and will challenge communities to rally together to support, teach, and nurture homeless students toward stability.
Ray Ward
Dr. Ray Ward is a family physician and a dedicated public servant serving as a Representative in the Utah Legislature. With a unique perspective shaped by his dual roles in healthcare and politics, Dr. Ward is deeply invested in shaping effective health care policies. In the legislature, he actively participates in the discussion and implementation of policies, while in his primary care clinic, he witnesses firsthand how these policies affect individuals and communities—sometimes positively, sometimes missing the mark, and occasionally proving counterproductive.
Opioid Epidemic: How We Got Here and How We Can Stop Making it WorsePassionate about combating the opioid epidemic, Dr. Ward focuses on identifying and promoting policies that can effectively reduce its devastating impact on society. Recognizing that the national overdose crisis continues to claim approximately 100,000 American lives annually—and is a leading cause of the recent decline in life expectancy—he is committed to initiatives that aim to heal and strengthen individuals, families, and communities affected by this ongoing tragedy.
Logan Toone
Dr. Logan Toone is an Assistant Superintendent in the Davis School District, where he supervises the district’s instructional and technology programs. His career in education began as a mathematics teacher at Bountiful High School. He later served as the mathematics curriculum supervisor and the director of the assessment department at the district office. Dr. Toone holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Weber State University and earned his Ph.D. in Education from Utah State University in 2012. His professional passions include data collection and analysis, digital learning tools, and instructional leadership. He resides in Clearfield, Utah, with his wife and four children.
Parenting 2.0: Raising the First Generation of AI-Integrated YouthIn his upcoming presentation, Dr. Toone will explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the world - in particular how it affects the roles of parents and children. Based on his lens as a public educator and a parent of teenagers and young adults, Dr. Toone will explore ways parents can continue to be successful - given that AI is a reality in homes, schools, and workplaces. Acknowledging concerns about student data privacy, academic integrity, and online safety he emphasizes that the role of parents is critical to protect young people and prepare them for a future that undoubtedly includes AI as a widely used resource. Dr. Toone’s presentation will assert that while AI can augment family and other experiences, it cannot replace a parent’s personal attention, care, nor the impact that individual parents make. His talk delves into the enduring power of human connection in families (and education and life) and suggests ways parents can optimistically strive to make a significant difference in their children's lives amidst incredible technological advancements.
Kate Olsen
Kate Olsen is a student at Brigham Young University (BYU), uniquely combining studies in Illustration and Environmental Science. She currently works as an illustrator for both the Life Science College at BYU and Grow the Flow, where she merges her artistic talents with environmental advocacy. Aspiring to attend law school, Kate aims to leverage her multidisciplinary background to address environmental challenges and drive positive change through policy and public engagement.
The Power of Interdisciplinary Action in AdvocacyPassionate about the intersection of art and science, Kate believes that embracing diverse fields empowers individuals to become forces for positive change. She has applied this philosophy to critical issues like the ecological challenges facing the Great Salt Lake. By creating visual narratives, she simplifies complex environmental concepts, making them accessible and compelling to a broader audience. Through her work, Kate has helped people not only learn about pressing environmental issues but also care deeply about them. She advocates for interdisciplinary collaboration as a powerful tool for advocacy and encourages others to pursue their varied interests to make a meaningful impact on the world.
